CANTON, Mich. — Edible cookie dough, the newest foodie craze sweeping the nation, is now available at Emagine Theatre concession stands across Southeast Michigan. The company announced a joint partnership with the Detroit-based startup the last weekend in March and will begin offering the sweet treat to patrons at its Macomb and Canton locations.

“We are excited to partner with a Detroit startup. We are passionate about supporting local products and the renaissance of Detroit,” said Anthony LaVerde, CEO of Emagine Entertainment.  “The cookie dough is delicious and a great addition to our expanded concession assortment.”  

Detroit Dough is the brainchild of Detroit residents Autumn Kyles, Victoria Washington and Daniel A. Washington who together took second place and fan favorite award at the Michigan Women’s Foundation Dolphin Tank competition last year.

“We are extremely excited to have our safe, delicious and ready-to-eat cookie dough available at Emagine,” said Kyles, CEO of Detroit Dough. “We believe in the Emagine brand and believe this partnership is a perfect way to get our product to consumers in more ways than one.”

Washington said the company had originally planned to open a location in Detroit’s NW Goldberg neighborhood this year. However, after re-evaluating the market, Detroit Dough is working with local companies like Emagine to expand its product nationwide. It is also continuing to host pop up locations with businesses around the city.

Detroit Dough’s signature Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough will be available to purchase at Emagine Macomb and Canton starting immediately. The price per cup is $7.50.

Cookie dough cafe coming to Detroit

DETROIT (WJBK) - If you're the type who just can't resist the temptation of cookie dough, you're in for a sweet treat this weekend. 

A cafe selling safe-to-eat cookie dough is popping up in Midtown from November 9-11. The cookie dough is safe because it uses heat-treated flour and does not include raw eggs. 

Detroit Dough plans to feature five cookie doughs - chocolate chip, brownie, peanut butter, no chips, and sugar. 

You can try out their dough this weekend at their pop-up shop at Detroit Clothing Circle, which is located at 499 W. Alexandrine. The shop will be open on all days from noon to 7 p.m. Price: $5 for one scoop, $7 for two scoops and $9 for three scoops. 

Daniel Washington from Detroit Dough joined us on The Nine to tell us more about the dough and the shop. You can hear from him in the video player above. 

The team behind the concept has plans to open a shop in 2019 at Linwood and Ferry Park in Detroit's NW Goldberg neighborhood, which is where Daniel grew up. 

Daniel tells us once the official shop is open, it will have a whole mix-in bar with dozens of different items to mix in with the dough.

We tried Detroit Dough’s safe-to-eat cookie dough

If you’re like me, you may have spent more than a few times snacking on frozen cookie dough at home on the couch, despite FDA warnings that raw cookie dough is not safe to consume. Having repeatedly ignored those warnings, I was thrilled to find out that Detroit is getting its own cookie dough café in the NW Goldberg neighborhood.

Detroit Dough is run by local twentysomethings Autumn Kyles and siblings Daniel A. Washington, Theodore Washington III, and Victoria Washington. While they haven’t opened their location at Linwood and Ferry Park just yet, they are having an ongoing pop-up November 9 - 11 at Detroit Clothing Circle, located at 499 W. Alexandrine in Midtown. 

Though the shop boasts five flavors to choose from – brownie, sugar, chocolate chip, peanut butter, and plain dough with no chips – Chief Storyteller Aaron Foley and I visited the pop-up to try just two flavors: brownie and chocolate chip. Here’s what we had to say about the experience.

AF: I had the brownie flavor, and I could easily see this becoming a guilty pleasure. It’s rich and chocolately, and none of the base ingredients (like, for example, flour or egg) overpower the actual flavor. There’s a reason why this will taste better than the cookie dough I’ll try to make at home.

KC: This is classic chocolate chip cookie dough without the looming threat of salmonella. I could definitely eat this while watching The Crownon Netflix during the long weekend. 10/10, would eat again.

Detroit’s First Cookie Dough Cafe Opening SOON!

A raw cookie dough cafe is opening its doors as soon as spring 2018. But don’t worry, this cookie dough is safe for consumption and salmonella free. The cafe will be called Detroit Dough and it plans to feature 5 cookie dough flavors: chocolate chip, brownie, peanut butter, no chips, and sugar. They’ll also have 50 different toppings if straight cookie dough isn’t enough. The cafe will be located in Northwest Goldberg in Detroit!

'Detroit Dough' bringing cookie dough cafe to city

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Cookie dough lovers, you're in luck: Detroit Dough is on a mission to bring a "safe-to-eat" version of the tasty treat to the city with pop-up locations and a storefront slated to open next year. 

"We've been operating with this whole mantra...Why not Detroit? Why not us?," said Daniel Washington, chief marketing officer for Detroit Dough. 

Washington and CEO Autumn A. Kyles, General Manager Victoria Washington and Executive Dough Chef Theodore J. Washington III saw the craze taking off in other parts of the country and decided to make it happen here. 

Washington said Detroit Dough is aiming to bring energy and excitement to local businesses with its pop-up circuit.

The next opportunity for you to get yourself a helping of cookie dough will be November 9 through November 11 at The Detroit Clothing Circle at 499 W. Alexandrine Street. 

According to the Detroit Dough website, flavors include Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, Sugar, Brownie and Hold My Chips (cookie dough without the chocolate chips.) 

The cookie dough, he explains, is safe to eat because Detroit Dough uses an organic heat treated flour instead of egg. 

Washington says eventually they will have more than 50 mix-ins available, referring to Detroit Dough as the "Cold Stone of cookie dough." 

On Wednesday night, the company will also be participating in The Dolphin Tank, a business plan and pitch competition hosted by the Michigan Women's Foundation, where the founders will try to secure up to $10,000 for their business. 

The Detroit Dough cafe is expected to open in the spring of 2018 on the corner of Linwood and Ferry Park Street.

Team plans cookie dough cafe to help boost Detroit neighborhood

A band of millennials are mixing up a new cookie dough business that they hope will serve as a "beacon of hope" in the depressed NW Goldberg neighborhood in Detroit.

Chief Marketing Officer Daniel Washington, a 24-year-old Detroit native, said his team of partners plans to invest $400,000 to launch Detroit Dough LLC, which will serve edible raw cookie dough. His sister Victoria Washington, 27, and business partner Autumn Kyles, 24 of Farmington, will lead the business as general manager and CEO, respectively.

"As a kid, I always loved to sneak a scoop of cookie dough when my mom made cookies. Today, I'm still in love with cookie dough and I know that most people still love it, too," Kyles said in a statement. "I think in today's age there's always that opportunity to push the boundaries and try new concepts that connect people together through food. This is my way of sharing my love with others while giving back."

In a Cold Stone-style service, patrons will be able to create their own treat, starting with one of five dough bases and choosing from more than 50 mix-ins. One scoop costs $5, two scoops for $7 and three for $9, with mix-ins available for 50 cents each.

The cafe will also serve 20 signature creations, it said in a news release. Homemade pastries, milk, Faygo pop, coffee and ice cream are among the other goodies that will also be on the menu.

"The dough will be safe to eat because there are no eggs. The recipe allows for an amazing product at the end of the day. My brother is an executive chef, who worked out the recipe," Daniel Washington said. 

Executive Chef Theodore Washington, 29, runs custom cake business Cakes By: Teddy Washington III LLC out of his home in Detroit. "(The dough) cannot be baked, so we are going to hang our hats on the people who like cookie dough without it being baked," Daniel Washington said.

Detroit-based Three Squared Inc. was tapped to design the 1,200-square-foot cookie dough bar on the corner of Linwood Street and Ferry Park Avenue out of six custom-built shipping containers. The cafe will feature patio and (nonalcoholic) bar seating. A contractor has not been selected.

The entrepreneurs are looking at a mix of loans, accelerator grants and private investments to fund the startup. Victoria Washington and Kyles will pitch for a $10,000 grand prize in the Dolphin Tank pitch event in Detroit on Wednesday hosted by the Michigan Women's Foundation. On Dec. 1, they will pitch for a chance at $2,500 in seed money in Lawrence Technological University's Detroit Center For Design + Technology Design Accelerator 10-week program. The accelerator "helps aspiring business owners take an idea from concept to creation to grow new opportunities in the city of Detroit," according to its website.

With a projected spring launch, Daniel Washington said they expect to break even in the first two years before realizing $300,000 in annual sales. 

The owners will offer NW Goldberg residents a 10 percent discount on all orders and donate 10 percent of nonresident sales to organizations and programs that serve the community.

"We want to remove blight. We see the disparity between the downtown and the neighborhood," Washington said. "So that's our mantra: Why not us? It's a neighborhood that deserves the same love and investment as others."

This just might be a dream come true.

A cafe selling safe-to-eat cookie dough — as opposed to the kind with raw eggs, uncooked flour and a real potential for salmonella — is looking to open in Detroit's Northwest Goldberg neighborhood this spring.

Detroit Dough plans to feature five cookie doughs — chocolate chip, brownie, peanut butter, no chips, and sugar  — and 50 different items to mix into the dough

The team behind the cookie dough concept — twentysomethings Autumn Kyles and siblings Daniel Washington, Victoria Washington and Theodore Washington — plans to open the shop, built from shipping containers, at Linwood and Ferry Park. 

Residents of Northwest Goldberg, where the Washingtons grew up and still live, will receive a 10% discount on their purchases and 10% of the proceeds from purchases by non-residents will be given back to neighborhood churches, non-profits and families who could use some help. "It might be something as small as paying someone's tax bill," said Daniel Washington, who is 24.

The Northwest Goldberg neighborhood is bordered by the Lodge, I-94, West Grand Boulevard and Grand River. 

“We want to do something different and unique," Washington said. "We believe we can attract people to this neighborhood."

An Edible Cookie Dough Bar is Opening in Detroit in the Spring

FINALLY. Somebody figured it out, and I’ll be first in line.

Detroit Dough will be opening up in the spring of 2018 in Detroit’s northwest Goldberg neighborhood. They’ll feature five different cookie dough selections and over 50 toppings options.

And yes, it’s safe to eat. No raw eggs or flour.

Even better yet, the founders are all Detroit natives who want to bring new business to the area.

If you’ll excuse me, I’ve gotta go get my tent so I can camp out for the grand opening.
